Do you ever have those moments when you see something or hear a song or come across some little thing that reminds you of something near and dear to you from your past? I had one of those moments the other weekend while sitting at my Mom's desk.........browsing some online store;) I look down and see these photos!
I would guess that I am about 15 in these photos.
My Mom found them in the back of one of her books.
Memories of my days in figure skating came flooding back! From my first time on the ice with my Mom when the love affair began. To starting off my first years in lessons when I was twelve, skating on Sunday afternoons and a few late nights during the week. Because it was a small club, and well the head of the rink thought Hockey was more important and the figure skaters got the leftover ice time, so to say. (Maybe that's why I don't like hockey?) I loved every minute of it though:) Eventually I switched to a bigger club and drove 45 min one way to get more ice time and better coaching. That ice time was at 6:45 AM! Yes up before the sun every single morning! My awesome sister (eleven years older than I) worked in the same town as the rink and would drop me off on her way to work. Well I drove and she slept;) My Mom would come later to watch the last half of my ice time and take me home two and a half hours later! Those were the days, the days that I lived to skate! Ate, slept, and drank figure skating! No joke; ate healthy so I would skate better, drank lots of water so I wouldn't get dehydrated and feel like I was about to vomit at the end of a program, and dreamed about skating a perfect program as I fell to sleep! I had a dream I had a goal and I was going to accomplish it, and I was going to do it in half the amount of time as the average skater. I refused to give up! And I did just that, I'm a double gold medalist in Moves in the Field and Freestyle and more. I learnt so many life lessons in figure skating that I will carry with me forever!
Well that's all folks! Thanks for reading my ramblings:)
Rachel

so cool! In another life, I am an olympic figure skater. It is by far my favorite event in the Olympics :)
ReplyDeleteRachel you are amazing on ice!!! I hope to see you again sometime. I admire how dedicated you were to skating. When you set a goal you are energized and determined. You've set so many wonderful examples to me, thank you!
ReplyDeleteThat's pretty neat! I didn't grow up around a rink, much less cold weather, but always loved watching the Olympics and the sport in general.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! That's definitely something to be super proud about.
